Background

Miter Health is a healthcare technology company focused on helping care providers manage patient care, assessments, compliance, and day-to-day operations through a connected digital platform.

A desktop application already existed for managing behavioral health programs. This project focused on creating a dedicated mobile experience that allowed patients to stay engaged with their care journey outside of appointments.

Rather than recreating the entire desktop application, the goal was to identify the workflows most valuable to patients and design a mobile experience that felt focused, familiar, and easy to navigate.

The Challenge

Behavioral health patients are often accessing their care tools in moments of stress or low energy. The challenge wasn't just translating a feature-rich desktop platform into mobile — it was figuring out which parts of that platform actually mattered to a patient between appointments, and making those parts feel effortless to access.

The mobile app needed to support the most important patient workflows while staying familiar to existing desktop users and fitting naturally within mobile constraints.

Information Architecture

With the session-centric structure confirmed, I mapped the core patient journey and organised the experience around the information patients needed most often. This helped reduce navigation complexity and ensured related activities remained connected throughout the experience.

Research & Exploring the Structure

User interviews were conducted by the core team in Tennessee. While I wasn't present for the sessions, I synthesised the findings with the team to align on which workflows were essential for mobile and which were better suited to remain on desktop. This conversation became the foundation for every structural decision that followed.

With the scope defined, three structural approaches were explored:

Assessments, sessions, and goals as separate destinations linked by session IDs. Familiar, but required jumping across sections to complete one task.

Navigation simplified, bottom nav removed, but the three still lived independently. Less clutter, same fragmentation.

Everything was organised within the session itself. One entry point, one context, no jumping between sections.

Option 3 was chosen because it matched how patients naturally think about their care: in terms of sessions, not categories. If a patient wants to do anything related to one session, they go there and nowhere else. It also clarified the mobile scope — the session was the sole task we wanted to support on mobile. Everything else that felt too complex was intentionally left on desktop.

Interactive Prototype

The prototype demonstrates how patients move through the experience, from viewing sessions and assessments to reviewing insights and tracking assigned goals.

Designing Around Sessions

Sessions became the foundation of the mobile experience. Rather than presenting assessments, goals, and notes as separate destinations, the app was structured around individual care sessions. This helped create a clearer relationship between activities and gave patients a better understanding of where they were in their care journey.

The session detail view was designed to surface key information while keeping secondary details accessible through expandable sections, helping reduce clutter without hiding important context.

Managing Assessments

One challenge was helping patients manage multiple assessments without creating unnecessary complexity.

Assessments were grouped into clear status-based categories — Pending, In Review, and Completed, carried over intentionally from the desktop platform to maintain consistency and reduce the learning curve for existing users. This made it easy to understand what required attention and what had already been addressed. Patients could then access assessment details and questionnaires directly within the context of a session.

Goals & Follow-Up

Goals were designed to help patients translate assessment outcomes into actionable next steps. Rather than treating goals as static records, the experience focused on helping users track progress, stay accountable, and maintain communication throughout the treatment process.

Design System & Components

To maintain consistency with the existing desktop platform, the mobile experience followed the established visual language already used across the product ecosystem.

Reusable components and patterns were created throughout the project to ensure consistency, improve scalability, and support future development efforts.

Reflection

Designing Miter Health reinforced the importance of prioritisation. The challenge wasn't adding functionality, it was deciding what not to include and ensuring the most valuable workflows remained easy to access on mobile.

Working remotely from the core team also shaped how I approached the project. Without being in the room for user interviews, I had to be deliberate about how I synthesised research, asked the right questions, and made decisions I could defend clearly. That constraint pushed me to document my reasoning more rigorously than I might have otherwise.

Working from an existing desktop product highlighted the balance between simplification and familiarity. While the mobile experience needed to feel lighter and more focused, it still had to align with workflows users already understood.

The project strengthened my skills in information architecture, workflow design, and translating complex healthcare experiences into interfaces that feel approachable and easy to navigate.
